Our Cultivation Sites
Above is a map showing Europe with a square around the Faroe Islands (A), the Faroe Islands with a square around the north of Eysturoy where the cultivation takes place (B), the fjord Funningsfjørður (C), and a satellite photo of the cultivation sites in Funningsfjørður (D). Orange colored areas are the macroalgal cultivation sites and blue colored areas are fish aquaculture. Source: ® Google maps (2018).
Ocean Rainforest has developed an innovative system for seaweed cultivation in open oceans. The system has been operating successfully since 2010. Ocean Rainforest is one of the largest seaweed cultivators in Europe, and currently we have approximately 150.000 meters of seeded seaweed lines deployed on approximately 220 hectares in Funningsfjørður and Gøtuvík, where continuous current and stable sea temperature provide the perfect condition for seaweed farming. The cultivation system is sustainable, scalable and through close monitoring and analysis we can predict the seasonal variation of the seaweed we cultivate.
Exposed Site
The site located at the outer part of the fjord is referred to the “nearshore exposed site” (picture D at the top of the page). The nearshore exposed site has occasional significant wave heights of 6m and a water depth of 50-70 meters.
Sheltered Site
The site in the middle of the fjord in picture D at the top of the page is categorized as the “nearshore sheltered site”. The nearshore sheltered site has occasional wave heights up to 3m and a water depth of 20-50 meters.
Our Facilities
Processing Plant in Kaldbak
In 2017, Ocean Rainforest purchased a 620 m2 processing plant in Kaldbak. The building has a capacity for cleaning, packaging, freezing, drying and ensiling. Furthermore, there is capacity for cold and dry storage. A hatchery for seaweed seedlings and a laboratory is also established at the facility.
The Ocean Rainforest processing plant in Kaldbak is certified by The Faroese Food Authority for food production.
Vessels
Our vessel Breiðbløðka is the first multi-purposed seaweed vessel. The boat is a new built no. 59 from KJ Hydraulic.
Breiðbløðka’s lenght is 12,56 m, and the breadth is 6 m. Breiðbløðka has a Palfinger crane that can lift 65 tons and a 15 tons KJ winches.
Our boat M/B Tongul FD 87 was built in 1991 by Johan Drage A/S. It is constructed with steel and is 12.2 m long and 5 m deep. Ocean Rainforest purchased Tongul in 2013. In 2017, Ocean Rainforest purchased the second vessel for its operation, and it has been named M/B Tang.
M/B Tongul has a crane that can lift 2-3 tons and a winch of similar tow capacity. Also, the vessel has a cargo that can carry 5-6 tons wet weight seaweed. M/B Tang has a crane, winch and hold with approximately half the capacity of Tongul.
