Ecklonia sp. / Sea Bamboo

Ecklonia sp., also known as sea bamboo, is a 3-5m long brown kelp. It is fastened to the underlying rocks or other kelp using its holdfast and has one thick and elongated stipe with long and narrow blades. Gas bladders aid in buoyancy, causing the blades to extend towards the surface and increase photosynthesis and growth.

Ecklonia sp. is found along the west-coast of South Africa, East coast of South and North America and is a dominant seaweed species in these cool-temperate waters. It is particularly abundant along the cold, nutrient-rich waters of the Benguela Current. It is also found in Australia and thrives in the subtidal zone, tolerating strong waves.

Ecklonia sp. is rich in bioactive compounds, including polyphenols, carotenoids, fucoidan and phlorotannin’s. Phlorotannin’s have antibacterial, antiviral, and antioxidant properties, while fucoidan has antiviral, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and anticoagulant effect. Ecklonia sp. also contain essential vitamins C and E, which are important for proper physiological function. Its high levels of minerals (calcium, potassium, magnesium) can enhance metabolic efficiency as well as support immune function. It can be used as a sustainable fish feed supplement as well as animal feed, biostimulant, and as nutrient supplements as well as other applications.
